Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The lagoon is giving up its share of redfish and sea trout this week, at least for my boat. The moon has been big this week pushing the bite to a later time in the day. The fish have been turning on in the later morning and after noon.
As we all know every day is different, one day you might have favorable conditions and the next day it is tough. Chris Coughlin and his two sons Erin and Evan joined me for a morning of catching with twenty-four reds and a flounder. The next day Rick Montz and Pat joined me and we spanked them again. It was Pat’s first red fishing trip and she took several over size fish including one over thirty pounds. The next day Bruce Bradford and friend Vince Gould tossed top water plugs and had them exploding. The oddest thing happened that day; Bruce was fighting a red when I noticed the plug floating on the surface while he was doing battle. I tossed a line out to catch the top water plug and brought it in. I noticed the first treble hook was off the lure. When Bruce landed the fish I noticed the leader was wedged between the treble hook that was in the fishes mouth. What a freak thing, I know I will never see this happen again. I am still trying to figure out how the red got the hook to come off the split ring.
Trout can be taken on the flats as well, look for them in the white patches. We have taken quite a few flounder this week on slam’Rs and shrimp. Work your bait close to the bottom for best results but I have taken them on top water plugs. Lady fish jacks and black drum are some of the other species we have been taking. I will let you know about the latest world records that we have taken in my next report.
