Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
July 10, 2004
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The summer is definitely here but we have been sent a gentle breeze daily making those hot days bearable. Actually the run to our first fishing hole the past few mornings was cool enough to wear a windbreaker. Glad to see that full moon go, it takes a little of the gamesters night vision away. We had to go to bait when we would have preferred plug or fly this week. The reds were tailing franticly this week making easy targets to see, but they were spooky. Part of the reason in the late morning we saw so many tails is the water dropped out more with each passing day this week. Extremely long cast were the key to a kook up and catch in that shallow water. Toss a shrimp of finger mullet at them for your best results of catching them.

You will also see trout on the flats but you will find more in the two to four foot range this time of the year. This is the time of the year when the trout are full of eggs, so you should only keep what you need too. Pigfish is the bait of choice for the trout and you should have no problem hooking up, if you want to go that route. I have seen lots of jacks and ladyfish that have been busting into the massive schools of finger mullet. The massive schools of mullet have been lining the spoil island shores and the flats edges in two foot of water. We have cast 12 Fathom shad bodies in pearl with black backs with much success. I hook the shad to a 1/8th oz or 1/4 oz jig head in two to four foot depths. Tarpon are showing good numbers and I saw one up real shallow this week. Amazing whose shoulders pop up when the water drops out. We have been taking our share of big reds this week as well. Almost all my clients this week caught the largest red fish they ever caught, only two clients didn’t. So that's happening now. And last of the lagoon report would be the flounder are still around but not in numbers like they were, we are catching a few in the by catch each week. At the rocks in Ponce inlet the mangrove snapper are eating on finger mullet or pilchards. You may also catch some small black drum that you may take on shrimp.

Be safe, Remember think like a fish to catch fish.
