Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
October 28, 2004
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am so glad things are back to normal in the Mosquito Lagoon again. The water is back to almost normal levels making sight casting easier than it was a month ago. Lower water means more exposure, fins, tails and pushes are more evident especially when it is calm. The red fish have been aggressive to snobbish until that moon kicks around in the right quarter. Then the fish are feeding like mad trying to fatten up before the water gets cold from the winter fronts. I have noticed the reds are bunching up more as well. I had Guy Riordan the New Mexico Game Commissioner fishing on a half day and he tossed top water plugs (stunt fishing) and plastics and took some nice reds and Trout. Jaye and Greg Elliot joined me for two half day trips and caught two snook, nine reds, five trout (can you say two slams) and a snapper. On day two they fished for reds only. They caught eighteen but the fish didn’t turn on until 10:30 that is when we got the first bite. We tossed live shrimp at reds all morning only to get snubbed and the fin. Greg and Jaye got to witness what happens in the lagoon more often than anglers think. Watch that moons when you are in little or non-tidal flow arias, the fish will turn on in minutes.

The trout have been eating our plastics, we have been dropping down to them in two to five foot of water. One-eighth ounce jig head should get you down unless you have a little current then jump it up to a quarter ounce. Bounce your jig along the bottom for best results. Use a braided line like I use, Stren Super braid will help you feel your bite. The fish will strike on the fall and that is why it is so important to use Stren Super Braid. I have fished side by side with someone fishing mono and I would feel many more bites than they would. That mean more bites more fish hook ups, it’s not rocket science. Mono has its place but for your cold deeper water jigging this is it. Jacks and ladyfish are going to crash the party fishing jigs like this. Make sure you have your Stren fluorocarbon leader in fifteen-pound test, it will save you a lot of jigs. For all of you coming to fish the spot tournament this weekend be careful running around, there is a lot of new debris in the shallow water. This is one of the best times of the year to fish in east central Florida. Sunny cool days and clear water is what I like most about this time of the year. Give me a call 386-345-0053 and I will put you on the fish.
