Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fred Bergert and brother-in-law joined me for a morning and took some nice reds to thirty-one inches and five trout. Trout season is closed November and December in our region south of the Volusia co. line. My next trip Carl Benovitz took ten reds and ten trout making it an enjoyable morning of catching. I use a hook remover on my trout so I don’t have to touch them. The worse thing you could use to hold them is a rag. Then it was Saturday, the water dropped the wind died and the tails came up. David Braken got to toss shrimp at tailing reds for the first two hours. Then I took him over to catch a few black drum that were also tailing nicely. He fished solo and caught eighteen fish (reds & drum) that morning. This cold snap we are having now will push the fish into the deeper water and making jigging action a ball. It is not uncommon for us to catch fifty fish on plastics. Crimp your barbs down so you can release the fish with ease.

Be careful out in the lagoon now, the water is fluctuating from day to day. I see people plow or dredge ruts in the flats way too often. If you do not have a boat capable of going over shallow flats then don’t go over them. I got an idea. Go out side and measure from the bottom of your skeg to the bottom of your boat. Of course you can trim your motor back a little but don’t get to happy with that button. That is how much water you should not try to run in. Yes not try to run in. Of course you can trim back a little but how much before you loose water pick up or steering. My boat measures out to two inches and I would never run it in two inches of water. Except for Boat Test US with sandy bottom conditions and no vegetation. Be safe.
