Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
December 21, 2004
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing on the flats has been good for redfish and they are eating shrimp and finger mullet. Be careful the water level has been very low making navigating a real chore for the ones that do not know the flats. If you are not familiar with the flats in the Mosquito Lagoon you should use your trolling motor or pole until you know them better than the back of your hand. Not only will you kill the grass if you run aground you may also kill some one in your boat. Obstructions like dredge heads pile and engine blocks can be found just below the water line and they will not move if you hit one. I am not trying to scare anyone just do not want to see anyone heart.

In the deeper water say three to five feet you can find trout in good numbers. I like tossing 12 Fathom shads in the three-inch size rigged with a one eighth or one quarter ounce jig head. We also used the xtract’R in the gold with a red back for excellent results. Remember trout season is closed now so catch and release fishing only. It is a good idea if you crimp your barb down on your jig so you do not have to touch the trout and you won’t remove there protective slime. I can usually just give the fish some slack line while they are still in the water and they will shake the hook out. Do not be surprised if you catch a few flounder while casting your jigs, we caught a few last week. If you like eating fish, flounder is one you will want to bring to the table. John Cordoba joined me for a morning trip and he took twelve reds, one flounder and small trout. The Miller family fished with me today and took many reds, on shrimp. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
