Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
February 5, 2005
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing the last two days in the Mosquito Lagoon has been a no go. It has been blowing steady twenty to twenty five knots and gusting. Come Monday everything will be back to normal. Prior to the winds we had excellent fishing on the flats as well as fishing the holes. Use a three-inch Crawler Gulp (by Berkley) in smoke or black with red fleck. Get your Gulp down when fishing the holes or flats edges in three to eight feet of water. One quarter ounce jig head will get you in the strike zone. Cast your Gulp out let it drop to the bottom and barely move it. The fish will just pick it up sutal, if you’re fishing the cold waters of the north lagoon. Slow is the best way to get and keep your bait in the strike zone. Especially if you locate a ball of fish, which is real common this time of the year. If you like numbers this is the best time of the year to fish the lagoon. We catch fifty or more trout but most of them are on the smaller side. Use a tool to unhook your fish so you do not have to touch them. You can also crimp your barbs down on the jigs so it won’t hurt the fish as well. I fish with Stren Super Braid or Fireline to be able to detect the slightest of picks. This is most important especially when you are retrieving a bait because the fish is coming words you.

Neil Davidson and friend Randy from Chef Gerald’s spent a morning sight casting the flats and caught ten nice reds and several keeper trout. Several of the reds were over the slot size. Snook season is back in and you can catch them on a number of baits. Be patient and quiet when approaching the dock or aria you are going to fish. It will definitely increase your chances of landing a large linesider. One more note before I go. Be careful out in the Mosquito Lagoon the water has been moving out quick.
