Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The lagoon has been nice and quiet since hunting season has started. I like this time of the year because of that reason. The reds are still up on the flats eating lots of finger mullet and small poppers. And Gulp shrimp! Poppers are a local name for these shrimp like crustations that roam the Mosquito Lagoon flats. I do not know if this is the real name for them or not, but that is what the locals call them. They look like a fresh water crawdad but they have a big claw. I like throwing something that resemble them when I am working the flats. The Gulp crab or shrimp looks allot like them and are a good choice when tossing plastics in the sand holes. Berkley also makes a crawdad that looks almost identical. Bounce or drag your offering through the sand. Once you get to the edge of the sand hole work your offering a little faster to avoid the grass. The trout are still taking the new penny jerk shad in the five inch length. Make sure you release your trout nicely not to harm them. You may want to crimp your barb down for easier release. Trout season is closed for another 38days. Trout are also being caught on the same baits in the deeper water around the Clinker islands. Work them slow; work them slow, am I making that clear enough. The water temp is dropping with the fronts that are passing. Last week it was 76 degrees in the river come turkey day it will be 10 degrees colder. The flounder are making a showing and we are catching them on the same artificial previously mentioned. They can also be found in Ponce inlet along with big reds and a few black drum. We have been blessed with nice weather for the past two weeks and when that happens the phone starts to ring and that is a good thing. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
