Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
September 14, 2007
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Trout fishing in the Mosquito lagoon has been hot for the most part then every once in a while you get a slow one. Most of the time when the bite is slow the moon is full or near anyway. Plus all the trout are spawning in the lagoon now. That may effect their eating habits as well. We have been fishing for the trout in one to four feet of water off the bars drop offs. We are bouncing Gulp shrimp or Jerk Shads off the bottom on 1/8th -1/4 ounce jig heads. Rotate your color of your Gulp bait from bloody, new penny, pearl, etc. until you find which color works best. I use Fire Line Crystal or Stren Super Braid on most of my rods the crystal blends well with the sandy bottom along most flats edges. The main reason for using both is for the sensitivity of them. The trout will pick your Gulp up on the fall or as it sets on the bottom. With mono you will miss a lot of fish.

I had Bill and Pat Griggs out with B/Law Danny (The Bud Man) last week. They fished two days with me and caught a bunch of fish. On day one we sought trout and they took home their limit and released twenty or so shorts and four reds. Bill (dad) wanted to catch a big red, said something about don’t know how much longer I will be able to fight a big one. Well after opening that can of wpas on that 44” redfish he landed I think he can hang with the big ones for a few more years. Pat said dad how you going to pick that big thing up for a photo. Bill smiled and said I’ll show you, come over here Joe. LOL Pat emailed me a few days later for his dad. Bill wanting to know what rod and reel I let him use and where he could get one. He fished with my Fenwick rod and Abu Garcia Cardinal 804 reel. Talk about a smooth drag! These past few weeks while we were fishing for trout, jack and ladyfish have been filling the gap between bites. We had to move several times to get away from the ladyfish they were so thick. The clients (some) like to catch a few, they both pull hard and a jack digs deep. We have been catching a few reds in the same drop offs. Mangrove snapper flounder and a small grouper or snook may even been taken fishing this way in this aria. A few tarpon are around and you should always have a rod rigged for them if you want to pitch an offering. Remember! Think like a fish to catch fish or just call me. 386-314-5656
