Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
November 14, 2007
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The lagoon has been a little more pleasant to fish the past few weeks. I think the hunters are in the woods instead of on the water. The reds are moving around at a snails pace due to the cold water and you will find the pups in deeper depressions. It is not uncommon to drift on top of your fish before seeing them move out. Reds that are sitting still are a lot harder to see rather then on the move. Look close in the white sand but you will find the fish over grass when the sun warms the flat up.

Black drum have been staged across some of the more popular flats and they will eat a Gulp shrimp in natural color. We proved that this week, if they refuse that toss a Gulp crab at their nose. Many small trout are around and you will catch them while bouncing your Gulp on the bottom of the deeper holes. This is where you will catch the small reds and a flounder every once in a while. This past week we caught flounder up to six pounds. In these deeper holes you will have a little ladyfish action in the mix. If you want to catch the bigger trout drift the flats and make long cast ahead of your drift. We took five trout over four pounds fishing this method the largest was seven pounds this week. Gulp jerk shad did the trick in new penny color fished on a weighted hook. Other colors will work but the key is working the sand holes on a windy day. Calm days are nice but the fish will move off if you have a couple of dancers on your boat. Longer cast are much easier to accomplish for the novice on a windy day. The wind also puts a little more oxygen in the water making the trout and other species a little more aggressive. Remember think like a fish to catch fish or just call me at 386-314-5656
