February can be transition time in the back waters

Capt. Todd Geroy
February 3, 2011
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, we're rolling into February and the folks up north are still dealing with blizzards, ice and all the problems that come with them. In south Florida, we are enjoying a nice warm up with the water temperatures finally in the upper 60's in the back bays. Although it is still mid winter, in February we often start to get some spring like days here and there.

This means red hot fishing right? Well, not necessarily. While there are some good fish to catch we are actually having to work a little more for them. When we get a sudden warm up in the mid-winter after such a long period of cold as we've had, fish start moving out of the deeper runs where they had been comfortable and scatter around. This makes it a bit harder to find the schools of redfish and trout that had been our "bread and butter" in recent months.

We are still catching some nice keeper sized trout and a few redfish including mid-slot sized fish here and there. But, we are doing a lot more moving around trying to cover as many spots as we can during each trip. The last two days, I have noticed a trend for the better action to be nearer to the passes.

Shrimp tipped jigs are taking speckled trout as well as some nice sized silver (sand) trout along with whiting in the same areas. Channel edges along the shallowest flats seem to be holding all. I am finding sheepshead starting to school near the passes as well. February usually is the kickoff month for their annual spawning run near the gulf. Pieces of shrimp fished on the bottom near any kind of structure will do the trick.

There is some live bait available to fill the cast net right now, but until the water temps get in the mid 70's I don't expect them to start producing to their full potential.

Not the most productive sounding report for the last few days. But, does this mean you shouldn't get out there and try? Of course not. YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU DON'T GO! We are still having some decent catches out there. You just have to be prepared to adjust techniques and hunt around a little right now.

It beats shoveling snow and driving on icy roads!

Naples Fishing Forecast:

February promises a variety of conditions. While we are having warm conditions right now, more cool weather is on the way next week. Sheepshead, pompano and sea trout should start schooling near the passes this month. Red fishing can be red hot in the back bays in Feb. and it is not uncommon to find some big tarpon "laid up" in the shallow back bays if the water temperature reaches 73.

Target Species:

Redfish, Seatrout
