Naples and Marco Fishing getting Better Finally!

Capt. Roan zumFelde
March 28, 2010
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

March has been another Cold Month but it seems it has come to an end. Well I hope it is ending. Fished another cool morning yesterday and it looks like another small front coming today. We need some warm, and things will be alright in the fishing world. It won't be perfect not this year but it will be alright. March kept us cold and bundled for most of it. Relegated to catching Trout a few Redfish and Sheepshead. The only bright spot for my fly fisherman was our night trips for Snook. Water temps were still not the normal 75 to 80 degrees but they were warm enough to catch some nice fish at night. There is certainly not as many as before but there were enough to get some nice fish and to catch 12 to 20 per night. A few Trout and some Big lady fish always rounded out the evenings. We even hooked a couple of small Tarpon. Backcountry fly fishing was a bit dismal. We caught fish but it was a struggle. It sure will be nice to pull away from the winter like conditions and get serious about fishing next month.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

What will the April Fishing be like I am asked 20 times a day? Well, Here it Goes. I am expecting and certainly hoping for these fronts to stop coming. Snook should start there movements to the passes and in from the Gulf. Tarpon will be appearing like they should of in March. I would expect in the first part of April to see the 75 degree water temps that should have been here in March. Tarpon run will not be in full swing but it shouldn't take long to get back on track. I have heard reports of some fish showing themselves in their spring time locations. I have seen a few Tarpon in areas that should be holding them, points in the backcountry, and even a couple toward the passes. Snook are starting to come out of there hidden water and I would expect them to be aggressive and wanting to feed to recover from there long hibernation. We lost a lot of Snook this year and I hope everyone that is fishing for them to be gentle and release all that you catch. Unfortunately I have seen a few at night that might not be following the new closed season. What I haven't seen is any law enforcement out watching, come on and get out there guys and check some of the night traffic. Some people think Snook season is open especially around Marco and Capri. This is all of our lively hoods and if we do not protect it we are going to have short futures. Enough about that. Back to the April Fishing; Reds will still be about, and the water should clear all the way through April, that will help us target them. I know there are some here but the water has been so dirty it is really tough to target them on fly. They are not easy to blind cast for this time of the year it is hit and miss. Bass fishing in the Glades is getting better. Catching good numbers in the Intercept and across the Alley. No Cichlids or Peacocks yet, time will still tell what is going on with them. Water temps still need to reach upper 70's and then we will see. Offshore should really start to shine. Bait schools will be making there way North and the fish will follow. Get ready it is probably going to come and go quick so don't be late to the party. Good Fishing Capt. Roan z.
