Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

We fished a full day a couple of days ago and the groupers were a little slow but we still managed a half dozen nice keepers and five goliath groupers to 70pds.Today we ran double half days and caught spanish mackeral lane snappers and 3 nice keeper groupers. On the afternoon trip we caught some triggers and porgies and then to top of the day we caught a 30 pd permit on 20pd spin. But now onto to something bigger, the oil spill in the northern gulf.It shouldnt have any effect on local fishing today or next month but not many people realize how many fish get together in the spring in the nortern gulf coast to spawn and lay eggs. The fish themselves may never see any oil but the eggs they lay that normally float along in pristine water now may be floating in oil wich would kill the eggs.Cobias and kingfish are two of the main fish in the nortern gulf that would be most affected. But what most folks dont realize is that the area where the rig sank is one of a few places in the world where bluefin tunas spawn a fish that is already taken a major beating worldwide. This isnt just an issue that affects the folks in the nortern gulf but all of us.Wether you are a commercail fisherman a guide in sw florida or a client of a guide we will all feel the effects of this spill.
