Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fly Fishing Naples to Marco

Thank god we are through with the hurricane season. It seems Naples and Marco were somewhat lucky again. We were hit but the damage was a whole lot less than it could of been if we had a storm surge. Not to make light there was significant damage to houses and places of business, I lost a roof, now we have become one of the blue roof people. Ok enough of this lets get to the fishing. Fly fishing has taken up were we left off before the storms. There are Tarpon still in the creeks and the Snook seem to be scattered from the beaches to the Rivers and so far it has been a great redfish run. You can throw in some fairly large Blue fish in all the passes, along with Large Lady fish. Lets talk a little about those ladies, we do not speak about them in our reports much because in some circles they are considered a trash fish. Personally, I love the Lady fish. I cannot think of a better fish for a begginner fly fisherman. They will hit just about any fly, they are hard to hook, a large one runs like a small bonefish and jumps like a tarpon. What more could you ask out of a fish? Oh yeah they take poppers just as well as they hit streamers. I know many of cold mornings when the Snook wouldn't take a fly and a Lady fish Blitz saved the day. Don't under rate this fish it is a lot of fun especially on a 4 weight or 5 weight. You also need to check out the New Teeny Series rods from Temple Fork Outfitters, they have a 4 weight thru 6 weight fast action rod with a full wells grip and a fighting butt, perfect for light Saltwater.

In shore Jig Fishing from Naples to Marco

The only question is what would you like to catch. I think in the last week there is not one species of fish that swims in South west Florida back Country that I haven't caught on a jig. Especially my Rz's New Deer Hair Jigs. They seem to catch every thing. We fished for a couple of hours on Thanksgiving Morning and boated 4 reds, 15 Trout, 2 Sheepshead, 2 Pompano, Countles Lady fish and Jacks, and a couple of Snook. Hard to beat for a Two hour excursion. We just fished points that had tide flowing past them between Naples and Marco. Every point had some type of fish on them.

Offshore fishing:

Offshore fishing has been a little spotty. When you can get out there you will have good chances for King fish, Spanish mackerel, Blue fish, Cobia, and some late season Snapper on the wrecks. The Grouper fishing has been a little slow. You will have to go far offshore to get any descent Grouper, but this time of the year you better pick the right day or it can get a little rough coming in. Fly fishing offshore when you can get out has been very good. False Albacore and King Fish have been on just about all the wrecks and throw in a good number of sharks. The Sharks hare taking large poppers in Blue and White or White and Green. When fishing for sharks on fly I like to fish a sliding popper rig with a big deciever type fly. I take a foam popper head and put a Tube through the middle. I string this thru twelve inches of #3 or #4 Piano wire or you can use coated wire. Then tie your Streamer Fly on and you are ready to go. I usually like a Streamer fly that is at least 6 inches long. If you would like any more information on Temple Fork Outfitters Fly Rods or any thing else we talked about just email me at roan @fishingextremes.com. Good Casting Roan z.
