Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Naples to The Everglades Fishing Report

Fishing in January has been excellent. We should see continued success as long as the temps stay mild. The Snook fishing in and around the lights at night has been fantastic. If you are in the Marco area at night you can count on catching Trout, Redfish, and yes even Tarpon under the lights. We jumped Two Tarpon in Marco River last week. The Flats fishing for Trout and Reds continues to stay strong. The Bass fishing in The Everglades semms to be getting better every week. There is still a little to much water to get those 100 fish days but it is not out of the question to catch 30 or 40. Offshore has been a little tough on our skippers, When they can get out the best fishing has been well South or far offshore.

Fishing The Flats

Fishing the flats has been good on both fly and plug tackle. The water is extremely clear so you need to downsize your leader and tippet to get the strikes. I also reccomend downsizing your fly selection. I have been fishing Small muddlers and Sparkle Shrimps in size 4 for Snook, Trout, and Redfish. In the same areas there are huge schools of Ladyfish and Jacks to keep you occupied. With the wind permitting I like to use a five weight rod this time of the year. In particular Temple Fork Outfitters new Teeny Rod. This is a great little saltwater rod because it has a full wells grip and a fighting butt. The action is perfect for throwing a clear sink tip line like the Rio Multi Tip in 5 weight. I like to match this up with a bauer MSL2. It is the perfect lightweight reel for the rod and it has a great drag in case you hook into a biggun. Last week my angler caught a 33 inch Refish on this outfit and it took him 50 yards into the backing three times. The reel performed flawlessly. On Spinning tackle you will want to down size your gear, lighter line and Flourocarbon leaders is a must for the clear water. Try Maxima Flourocarbon it has has great abbrasion resistence and is all but invisible in Saltwater. The best tip I can give you for this time of the year is to slow down, keep the bait or fly in their face aas much as possible. Also if you are poling a bank or working a bank slow your boat movement down, do not rush your angler make repeated casts to the same general location.

Fishing the Everglades Bass

Bass fishing in the Everglades just keeps getting better with every inch of water lost. Along with the Bass you will find lots of Bluegill and Cichlids. The key now is to go under the surface for fast action. I like to throw more muddlers or Wooly Buggers this time of the year. Poppers will start producing soon enough. If you like worm fishing, it seems the bass can't resist them. Try smaller worms four to six inches in red black core. I like to use a 1/8 ounce weight with this. I think the slower the fall the better. The new Okuma EVX Specialty rods from Okuma are great for this type of fishing. It may just be me, but they seem to be extra sensitive to feeling the bite.
