Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Naples and marco Fishing Report

July has been a very wet month, which is not all bad for our small Tarpon and Snook Fishing. There seems to be small Tarpon showing up everywhere in the back Country from Naples to Marco and even a few big one's are starting to show back on our beaches around Marco and down to Cape Romano. So far so good No Hurricanes if we keep this up we are going to have a terrific August and should see some of the best fishing of the year. Fished a fly charter yesterday and caught some nice Snook in Gordon Pass on a Small Baitfish pattern tied to look like an Oscar. The water is darker now so I go to more yellow's, and Orange type colored flies. Dark flies in Purple are also good choices this time of the year. The catch of the day was a 34 inch Snook that took near a dock around the pass and was landed by my angler on a five weight TFO TICRX rod. The key to landing these big Snook on smaller fly rods is to handle them gently from the start. If you lead the fish away from cover instead of trying to horse them out a lot of the time they will go with you, and then when you get them into open water you can turn up the heat. We also boated two nice Tarpon a fifteen and twenty pounder up in a little known Creek. Snook are on the beaches and if you want something good to eat try the passes with some white bait for big Mangrove Snapper. Early in the morning or at night is the best time for this. Redfishing has been a little slow but there are some around Rookery Bay and South of Marco in Morgan Bay. If you are wade fishing from the beach try Tiger Tail Beach and Lagoon this is my favorite time of the year for this, and don't be surprised you might even see a small bonefish or 100, there are some schools around.

Offshore fishing Naples to Marco

The good news is you don't have to go to far to get into good action. With gas prices as high as they are anything over ten miles seems to cost a fortune. Check the Naples and Marco Reefs. I hear the big Snook are there along with some big Redfish. Snapper fishing at night on the Georgia Lee is very good also. In fact all the nearshore wrecks have the Snapper. Grouper is still tough, most of the good grouper fishing is way offshore and not worth the money in gas. There are also plenty of permit and if you get to the shrimpers they have False Albacore and Blackfin Tuna. Keep a bait handy for a Sailfish, one of my fishing team members caught one last week on the T tower.

Freshwater fishing

The Bass fishing is still good in all the canals across Aligator Alley. It has been an unusual year and the canals have stayed strong right into summer.
