Week of Grand Slam Fishing

Capt. Chris McCubbin
March 29, 2009
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow the wind has been howling and the fish are chewing. We have had 20knt south winds all week, but the fishing is good in the backwaters. Pilchards are in the deeper water on the wrecks, you just have to get out to get it. Seas have been anywhere from 2-5ft out on the wrecks.
Before all this wind I was getting big spanish mackeral and some kings to 10lbs on pilchards and on the fly on the nearshore wrecks. The big fish in the 20lb class are here now and I have been seeing the skyrocket every morning while Im catching bait before my trips. Also there should be some big cobia showing up along with barracuda, permit and sharks.
Snook fishing has been great and they are getting bigger. I managed a few keeper fish this week, with the big girl going 32.5in. We did manage to hook a monster mid week that we lost at the boat due to a worn out leader. Fish was every bit of 45in and Nick the 9 yr old who hooked it did a great job, until he saw the fish and threw the rod into my hands. I am pretty sure it gave him a good adrenaline rush. The passes have been real good early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The docks have been holding tons of fish, but the dolphins have been real quick to ruin the party. The have become way to friendly the last few years.
Redfish have made a good showing as of the last two weeks. I managed 2-3 nice fish each day I fished for them. They were all in the 23-32in range. Heavy chumming was key, and giving each
spot 20 minutes was mandatory.
Trout fishing is still good in the deep cuts and off the mangrove shoreline with good current. They are all nice fish in the 17-22in range, and heavy chumming is also the key to success with them. Mixed in have been blufish, ladyfish, jacks and alot of little blacktip sharks.
Tarpon are here, just need the wind to lay down to get out and fish for them. I have been seeing fish everyday in the passes and a few in the back. We manged one about 50lbs this week fishing in a back bay around a dock trying to hide from the wind. When this wind settles down I will be out looking for some fish on the beaches. Now is the time to book your tarpon trip. We are coming up on the best months for big tarpon.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

Snook fishing is really improving as they are making there way to the beaches. The fish are getting bigger and we should be catching some real big fish this month and next. The redfish bite will improve with the waters warming and trout fishing will slowly fizzle out.
Tarpon are the main targets the next few months. They are here and will be around till the end of July. A great time to fish for them is late afternoon till Sunset. Give me a call to reserve your spot. 239 404 6255
