Wintertime Creek Redfishing

Jennifer Wolter
December 30, 2012
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Water temps are dropping drastically with the onset of winter in SW FL. Consecutive strong cold fronts push baitfish into the the creeks as the water cools. Fish will follow them and you'll see schooling activity. This time of year fish congregate in substantial numbers in the mouths of creeks particularly those that are more narrow with deeper holes. Winter's ultra low minus tides concentrate snook and reds into these deeper pockets. A 1/4-1/8 oz jig head rigged with a plastic shrimp or curly tail grub and 40lb fluoro leader in these areas is deadly as jigging in these deep holes stirs up the mud and gets the attention of a redfish waiting to ambush.
