Palm Beach to Jupiter

Palm Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing Report March 14, 2006

Well spring is just around the corner and the low-pressure fronts will start to fade. The past couple of weeks have been windy, but this has not stopped the fish from biting. The grass flats are still thick with Pompano, Ladyfish, Jacks, and Trout. The lady fish and Pompano have all been hanging in the same depth 3-7 feet, hitting buck tail jigs tipped with shrimp. The yellow jigs have produced the most Pompano due to the windy conditions. The ladyfish have been in big pods covering 10 to 20 yards, with the average catch 1 to 3 1/2 pounds. The Sea trout have been just over the slot lately with an average size of 15” to 19”. The trout have been hitting buck tail jigs, crank baits, and soft plastics. The Trout are hanging on the edge of the drop offs in 2-4 feet were the sea grass is patchy. Black Drum have showed up to crash the party lately. These fish pull hard and are quit tasty to. The Drum have been real tight to the mangrove banks, looking for any easy pickens they can find. The Mangrove snapper bight is still great with some fish reaching the 15” mark. These little fish can clear out a couple dozen shrimp really fast.

The River fishing has been on fire the past couple of weeks, with many trips producing catches of three species of Snook (Common, Fat, Sword spine). This makes for great fishing when you never know what kind of Snook will hit next. The Snook have been hitting live greenies, small finger mullet and live shrimp. Early morning and late afternoon produces the best bite for the Snook. Mixed in with the Snook are the jacks, Lookdown fish, and Mangrove snapper. The Jacks are still huge and will crush any live bait thrown in there direction. Many of these fish have been 10 to 15lbs, and with light tackle this will wear you out fast.

The Night fishing for Snook has been excellent lately while many of the fish caught are 20” to 30”. The best bait for the Snook has been live Greenies and small shrimp. Most of the docks in the Palm Beach area are stacked with Snook, with some docks holding 50 to 75 Snook. Outgoing tides produce the best bite, while the incoming tide allows those who like to fly fish, and those who have never Snook fished at night before easier. This is because the incoming tide brings in the clean water. Congratulations to 6year old Rory Murphy and 13-year-old Christian for their first Night Snook fishing trip. These little guys put a whooping on the Snook, with one of there Snook caught reaching 29”, way to go guys. Well that is the report for the past couple of weeks.
