Palm Beach to Jupiter

Palm Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore Fishing Report April 3, 2006

Spring is here and the weather has been great with the exception of the wind. The wind just seems to blow everyday making for choppy conditions on the flat. The ladyfish are still hanging around, but the pompano are starting to move out due to the warmer water conditions. The best way to find the Pompano when the water is choppy is to idle slow and watch for them to skipping behind the boat in the wakes. The pompano have still been hitting white and yellow buck tail jigs tipped with shrimp. The trout bite is good with many of the big fish found up in the shallows holding near patchy sea grass, and sand potholes. The trout have been hitting soft plastics and crank baits. There are many sheepshead and mangrove snapper up on the flats, with most of these fish hitting live shrimp free lined or under a cork. Snook are also up on the flats with many of these fish around 22” to 26”. The Snook are taking live greenies and small live finger mullet. Most of the Snook are in 2 to 5 feet of water.

The River fishing is still on fire and producing mixed bag days with Common, Fat, and Swordspine Snook all being caught on the same trip. All of these fish have been taking live free lined greenies, mullet and shrimp. The Common Snook have been 18” to 30”, and the Fat Snook have been around 16” to an occasional best that is 24”. The Swordspines don’t get big at all, with most of the fish measuring 10”. The outgoing tide has produced the best fishing although early morning incoming tides can produce many fish. The “Jacks are back”; the big Jacks are around the clean water busting live mullet near seawalls and docks. These fish are weighing from 5 to 20 pounds. This is a great fight on 10-pound test. The snapper bight has also been great, around docks and sea walls with many small groupers caught in the mix.

The night fishing for Snook is also awesome, with the night producing the most and biggest fish. The Snook have started to move towards the inlets and are hungry. The bait of choice is Small live finger mullet, Greenies, and occasionally live shrimp. The outgoing tide has produced the big fatties, but an early AM incoming tide will work when traffic is slow on the water.

I also want to thank Florence for one of the best trips ever. I was privileged to take out Florence for couple of hours Snook fishing in the Lox River. Florence is a 99-year-old woman from Missouri, who is still very active and loves to fish. She caught 3 Fat Snook 21”, 22” and a monster 24”. She also tangled with some 5lb Jacks and many mangrove snappers. I just want to say thanks to her, and I appreciate all the stories and memories she passed to me. THANK YOU FLORANCE

The fresh water fishing has been great for bass. The Bass have been on the spawning beds and these fish are fat. Many of the fish the past couple of weeks have averaged from 2 to 7 pounds all taking artificial baits. The best spot has been Lake Osborne near thick grass and lily pad banks with sand beds. The peacocks have also been around but have been very shy? The Mayan cichlids and blue gills have also been active with many of these fish being very aggressive. If you a fly guy these fish can be a lot of fun.
