Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

THE PANAMA CITY FLORIDA REDFISH & TROUT BITE

(ALONG WITH THE TEMPERATURE ) IS STILL ON FIRE

Although the temperature is still in the upper 90's the redfish and trout bite has not cooled off. Lucky for us Panama City fishermen the redfish and trout bite stays pretty consistent all year long. The best time to get out there and catch these powerful game fish this time of year is still early morning and late afternoon into the early evening. On artificial lures we have been having our best luck with topwater plugs such as the Rapala Skitter Walk, The SPRO Dog and of course the Spook Jr. After the sun comes up a bit we switch to a Gulp sinking minnow, 5” jerk shad or a gold spoon. Remember to work these soft baits and spoons in and around the tall grass during the higher tides or over the sand bars and pot holes on the flats. If the trout bite slows down a little switch up to a Cajun Thunder with a 3” Gulp shrimp rigged approx 18” below the cork. We have had several great trips this week where the Cajun Thunder really saved the day. Make sure you keep a couple of these in your tackle box.

This week I had an opportunity to sneak out and enjoy a morning fishing trip with my good friend Ronnie Lawson. We had some pretty good luck with a school of redfish earlier in the week and took a chance they would still be in the area. We quickly located the school and Ronnie had a rare but not all together uncommon hook-up. When you toss a top-water plug into a school of redfish you can sometimes get more than you bargain for. Ronnie ended up having two 26” redfish hook-up with his plug which made the fight on 8lb tackle very interesting. To complicate matters I hooked up with a nice red at the same time so we ended up doing the redfish dance. We landed all three after an intense fight and quickly snapped a picture of our triple hook-up. For those animal lovers out there don't worry all three redfish were released alive and well. Its not illegal to hook and hopefully land two redfish (one fish more than one person is allowed) at once as long as you release at least one of them...of course after you snap a victory photo.

Dan Walsh has been good friends with Capt. Todd and myself for years and we always jump at the chance to take him on a fishing trip with us. Not because he is a great fisherman but mainly because he will keep you laughing the entire trip. Well as you can see he got the last laugh with a couple of back to back 22 and 23 inch trout on topwater. By the way good luck with your up-coming surgery. We are all looking forward to fishing with you soon so don't give the hospital staff too much trouble or they may pull the plug.

Capt. Todd has had several great trips this week as well. He said he almost exclusively used the Cajun Thunder this week and it produced several limits of trout with a couple of them over 22 inches along with some very nice redfish. He says that depending on where you fish you may have to weed through the smaller trout in order to hook-up with those nice keeper sized trout. He recommends trying several different colors and sizes of Gulp shrimp and also be willing to try a couple different spots until you find the right combination. Just keep in mind that the Gulp baits will catch just about anything that swims on the flats so be ready to unhook a couple redfish, catfish , ladyfish or bluefish along with a host of other species.

We only have two openings left for the Labor Day weekend so if you are interested in catching some trout or redfish up on the flats be sure to give us a call. As always good luck on the water.
