Florida Fishing Report for Panama City & Destin

Capt. James Pic
March 22, 2004
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/N. W. Florida

Well, well, looks like things may be shaping up 'round these parts. Heard about a 63 pound cobia somebody caught but could not be confirmed. Then the same fish shrunk down to 40 pounds. This fish must have been on the Adkins' diet because when the truth finally hit, it turned out to be only 30 pounds. A couple of people that I trust have told me they have seen one or two fish but the run is far from starting. A lot of these fish sit on the wrecks during the winter. I remember catching 30 lb. cobe's in the middle of January in 200 feet of water when I worked in the oil field. These early fish could be fish moving in off of the local wrecks. The big "pods" have not arrived.

Offshore I hear good things about the amberjack on the closer bridge spans and plenty of snapper. Snapper season opens on April 15th.

In the bay, some are finding spanish and some are not. Depends on if you know where to look. A few straglers are showing up everytime the wind blows southeast but the thrust of the run is still a few days away. We found a big school yesterday worked them pretty good with flies and gotcha plugs. As each day goes by more and more will be showing up.

Speckled trout have been very active the last few weeks most still in the canals and bayuos but on the move and getting close to the mouths and beginning to venture out on the flats. The red fish are also starting to move, getting itchy for the spring. DOA Shrimp and live shrimp have been best on spinning gear, with white clousers working for the fly fisherman. In the pass the sheepshead are starting to school and preparing to spawn. Live shrimp and fiddler crabs are best for these. The blues are still hitting around the jetties late in the day and this will only get better as the spring warms things up.

If your thinking of coming down and hiring a guide always try us first. I consider myself, by far, the best guide in the area. I have never had a "no fish" trip. I specialize in reds but if you want numbers we can do that too.

In the store we now sell beer and wine, she-crab soup, Daves Insanity Sauce along with other gourmet delights. Come by and see us.

Sight casting fly and spinning for reds, trout, bonita, spanish, jacks and many other species. Live bait trips available as well as hot topwater action in the bay around Panama City, Florida. Depending on the time of the year I can normally put you on legal grouper in the bay, monster speckled trout, lot's of fly fishing action and just about everything else that swims and good tablefare.
