Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report
Panama City/NW Florida
The redfish bite has been great the last few weeks. When I left for Belize we were catching a lot and when I returned it continued. Along with reds some good trout have been caught. This should continue for another month or so.
The spanish are thick in the bay although I have not seen a day with fish piling through the pass. This could happen with the full moon. We normally catch big spanish and in good numbers through Thanksgiving. Flounder are on a the move with that fishery improving each day. Last, there are a lot of mangrove (black) snaps all over the bay, many are legal size.
People have been asking me about my rod building. I cleaned out a room in my home and got rid of some trash that was taking up space, mostly on the weekends, turned it into a rod building room. I can do repairs also...so anyone that needs a guide or a rod re-wrapped shoot me an email and we can talk about it.
This time last week I was having breakfast at the Belize River Lodge just north of Belize City. Mike Martin and I took a five day holiday to fish for bones, snook and 'poons. The lodge is beautiful and the host's, Mike and Margaruitte, are wonderful folks that catered to all of our needs. Four days of tropical rainforest, great food and fishing wasn't quite enough for me...I have to go back.
The fishing was great. Our guide, Raul, made sure we were on fish every day. The first day I was fortunate to catch the "back country slam", bone, tarpon and snook on the fly. Fishing for the bones was great with them usually picking up the fly if you put it close. Although a little higher skill level is needed for the poon's and snook, the bones were caught on 30 to 40 foot casts. I highly recommend the lodge for a fishing vacation and rate it as one of the best experiences of my life.
I'm putting together a group for a return trip to the Belize River Lodge for December 2007. Anyone that has fished with me or reads these reports that wants to go on a great once in a lifetime trip, shoot me a mail or call and I will give you the specifics.
See you on the water.
