Flounder Fishing 101 - Pensacola Fishing Reports

Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Flounder Fishing 101
Yesterday 10-23-2015, I had Steve from Kansas City, Missouri on board the Triton. He was down for a wedding and told me that wherever he travels he tries to book a charter to try new styles of fishing. I told him about our inshore fishing and that I was on a good Flounder and Redfish bite. He's a northern fisherman and fishes mainly artificials, which is right up my alley as the style of charter I run most of the time. I woke up to a brisk east wind blowing about 13 knots, but told Steve I had a few places we could hide and we could give it a go.
I found a nice cove that was protected from the wind a bit and an area that I've been catching some nice reds and a few flounder.

I positioned the boat and set the Power-Pole and I had Steve tossing a 3/8oz jig rigged with a Matrix Shad (Limbo Slice).
I gave him a few lessons on how to work the jig for flounder, how to feel for the bite, and how to set the hook. Steve was a quick study, and it didn't take long until he was hooking a few. He did miss some off and on, but he did really well for his first time flounder fishing. The biggest caught was 19 inches out of a total of 7 keepers and 5 or so throwbacks. After he started to get the hang of it and we had a good mess of flounder in the live well, I fished a little bit with him and caught 5 flatties myself, with only one being a keeper. The other flatties were only 11.5 inches, so we let them grow up for next season. No redfish today, doggone it! I really wanted to get him on a redfish, but that just means he'll have to come back and we'll give it a try on the next outing.
