Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

August arrived with a nice tropical storm off the coast of Pensacola, Edouard, headed just west of our area, bringing with it high surf and winds for a few days. Since the storm brought higher than normal surf, I was not able to get out offshore or fish on the beaches, so I stayed inshore all week.
Fishing inshore has been pretty decent, and we've been catching a few nice redfish in the pass and we have also been catching some hard-fighting bluefish and some exciting light tackle skipjack.

Mixed in with the inshore bite are specks and a few slot redfish. I've been also running a few shark trips the past few days and the bite has been very good. Most of the sharks have been black tips, but a few were bull sharks, and from time to time we hooked a big nurse shark. This has been a nurse shark summer. I've hooked and brought to the boat 8 nurse sharks so far this summer. After we get a few pics, we released the fish unharmed.

Red snapper season has closed in federal waters, but is still open in state waters. I've got a few trips near the end of the week, and we plan to go after some tasty red snapper, and if the seas cooperate, the bite should be good. We are also going to go after a few kings to spice things up.

Looking to the near future of late October and early November is our annual redfish run. Large schools of redfish invade our beaches by the thousands. On an average day hooking 20+ fish a day is not unheard of.
This big redfish was just one of 25 reds caught on November 14th. The fish hit a 2oz White Spro Buck Tail Jig. If you would like to hook up a 30lb red fish on light tackle, give me a ring and we'll get you the catch of a lifetime.

Tight lines.
