Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report
For Redfish University's 220th fishing charter of the year, we played the shallow water game with the bull redfish in Pensacola Bay. Yesterday, and after reading the comics, we concentrated in the northern parts of the bay for another extraordinary instructional session with the legal redfish and quality speckled trout. Lots and lots of trout and redfish and just kept a few for the evening's dinner. For anglers who demand the best in saltwater angling instruction, Redfish U. is the only choice on the northern Gulf Coast. We're taking the large redfish on the flats on a few great baits such as the Berkley Gulp! 4" Shrimp and the Berkley Gulp! 5" Jerkshads. For the speckled trout and redfish on our instructional sessions we will use a wide variety of baits from Berkley Gulp!, Sebile, Johnson and some new baits from Berkley Havoc including the Grass Pig in Watermelon, California and Swamp Gas. While we're in the instructional mood and so many rely on Redfish University's inshore technique recommendations for bait choices, locations, fishing reports and other publications, we've found some water clarity issues after some periods of heavy rain around Christmas. In this instance, we're using some more unconventional tricks special to Redfish University including plastic Woody's worm rattles, small glass neon/fluorescent beads and tiny glow sticks equipped with a powerful strobe pulse. All of these productive items provide sound, color, light and vibration. The trick to the beads is threading them between a series of knots in your leader material near the actual bait, while the 3/4" strobe lights can be inserted into virtually any Berkley Gulp! or soft plastic bait. All of these techniques can be used in conjunction with the Redfish University drop-shot rig that we invented along with glass, rattles, light and strobe energy at the age of 8.
Some exciting new additions are coming to Redfish University in 2013. As Redfish U. continues to capture an ever-growing market share of the saltwater instructional guide niche as well as regular Redfish U. trips, we will bring on an Associate Professor and an additional 2013 23 Pathfinder HPS, not to perform instructional guide trips but to capture and secure the huge number of the more elementary, family/kid style charters that we pass on each year. This apprentice will provide trips in search of bull redfish, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, sharks, white trout, etc. and will also include the use of live and natural baits for less experienced anglers. 300 is the goal for 2013 and the "Fishing with Roland Martin" episode will help.
Thanks again for an incredible 2012!! E Holstman
