Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report
Look out-- its RED OCTOBER!!!
Red Snapper in the morning and Bull Red Fish in the afternoon, all I'm seeing is RED! Its official, the Red Snapper season is October 1st to November 21st. Only on the weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sundays- that's right, only 24 days total! It starts Fridays at 12:01 am and ends Sunday at 11:59 pm. For the first few weekends I think I'll be working the midnight shift. If the weather is good the boat ramps are going to be busy!
As September leaves, October brings in a whole new set of rules for the inshore fishing around here. The quality of Speckled Trout being caught has greatly improved over the last few days. The bigger fish are moving, especially early in the morning. The best fish are coming on the big dog walking plugs worked over the four to six foot of water with grass and deeper water close by. Start with the SPRO SALT- DAWG 125 or Rapala Skitter--walk early and then as the sun gets up go to the sub-surface mullet type plugs. I like Big Bite Baits the best, try the 6" Bio bait Paddle Tail Jerk Minnow in the Pearl Shrimp color. Try these and you'll be the big chief on the Speck catching totem pole this fall.
Last month was productive with fishing the docks for slot sized Red Fish and it should carry on into this month. If you find a dock holding the fish, keep it close and don't share it. You should be able to go there just about any time and have a blast trying to horse one out from around the dock pilings. For live bait, I have been using shrimp and throwing the cast net for the small LY's and Menhaden. For artificial bait, try Bio Baits four inch Root Beer Gold Flake Bio Shrimp on a light 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jig head.
Spanish mackerel have gotten into full swing. These fish are all over Choctawhatchee and Pensacola Bays. There's a lot of fish on the beaches, also. From Perdido Key to Destin, these fish are eating everything they can catch in order to fatten up for their migration back south.
The Flounder migration is also getting started. As these doormats are making their way to the Gulf from the rivers and backcountry for their annual spawning run, you can really have a good time with them and do they eat well! They can be caught on live bait of just about any sorts, as long as it's on the bottom and moving fairly slow, lead head jigs and soft plastics will work also.
The Bull Reds are starting to show up!! The large schools of these awesome beauties typically aren't around until the middle of October, but I've been doing well with these fish already. If any of you anglers have ever wanted to catch a trophy Red, and a lot of them, now is the time to book a charter for the fall and winter season. It's not uncommon for us to catch between 20 and 30 of these 25 pound class fish in a day. The fish will stay here all the way through March, with the biggest schools here now through the end of November. Don't miss out on the RUNNING OF THE BULLS!!!
