Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!
Those three words will just about explain it all. The HOT water temperature brings all the pretty people to the beaches and shuts down the Speckled Trout bite. The HOT air temperature gets us anglers on the water early so we can get off early before the daily afternoon thunderstorms build up. And last but most importantly the HOT fishing keeps me getting up everyday at 04:00.
Al Robinson caught this nice 25 pound King.
That should tell you that if your thinking about going fishing then you should plan your trip early, fish the Gulf if she will let you and watch out for the frequent pop up afternoon thundershowers.
The King Mackerel bite is as good as it gets right now. The fish are close in and are fairly easy to find, just find the bait and you’re on the fish. Most of the close in fishing is around the sea buoys in Pensacola Pass. There are a lot of buoys so don’t get discouraged if you don’t hook up on the first couple just keep working your way out until you start getting knock downs and then your on the right spot.
My technique is old school but it works and it will also catch big fish. To start with don’t over tackle!!! That is the most common mistake. I use 15-pound outfits – ABU Garcia 6500 C-3, s – backed with 150 yards of 15-pound test Power Pro then topped off with 15-pound test Berkley Big Game. That will give you about 300 yards of line to use, there’s not many fish out there that can spool off 300 yards of line. Then I add about 6 feet of 25-pound test fluorocarbon leader to the end of the main line – this there to prevent the bigger fish from tail whipping the main line and breaking off. Then to the wire leader this is the most important part – I start out with the smallest swivel’s that are available – SPRO Power Swivel size #8, they are tiny & tough!! Then I use no more than 18 inches of main wire in the 27-pound size, to the nose hook, I use Gamakatsu #4 extra sharp round bend treble hook’s, then I jump up to 40-pound test wire to the stinger hook this is the catching hook and that wire is a very important part because this wire is in the toothy critter’s mouth most of the time. So there you go a professional tip on Kingfish leader making and light tackle specialist. Just remember that King Mackerel have very large eyes and can see very well, God made them that way to give them an edge so downsize your tackle and I will guarantee your catching ratio will improve.
I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing.
Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
