Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
September 13, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

It’s time for the fall migration of big Spanish to start showing up along with a following of Smoker King's. In my last 3 trips this past week we caught several nice Spanish. We also had a couple nice 15lb King’s. It’s time to be rigged for the big ones, on my next trip King fishing you can bet I’ll be tackled up for the SMOKERS!

There are schools of Lady Fish by the hundreds on the beach -- this brings in the smaller size sharks like the black tips and small bull sharks. These fish are a blast to practice your sight fishing skills on. Just cruise the beach till you find the big schools of Lady Fish, stay close and be ready it won’t be long before the sharks show up . Pitch him big live bait or a chunk of fresh cut Lady Fish on a 20lb spinning outfit and hold on!!

It’s not going to be long before the inshore fishing gets cranked up for the fall. Flounder are starting to move a little. We caught several nice Flounder last week on an inshore trip along with a few nice Speckled Trout also. The Specks are still eating mostly at night, fish early and late in the daytime with top water plugs and soft plastic jerk baits for the better fish. For the Red Fish & Flounder- fish around the docks in the middle of the day and at high tide for your best chance there.

There are a few schools of Bull Reds showing up; they’re being caught in the deep water around Pensacola Pass. Your best bet there is fishing a thirty pound test outfit Carolina rigged; rig it with a crab or any kind of live or dead bait with just enough lead to hold it close to the bottom and hang on.

The Red Snapper bite is as hot as I have ever seen it this time of the year. Just last Tuesday I had a group of nice folks down here from Milton FL. We had one of the best Red Snapper catches that I have had in a long time. We caught our federal limit of 8 fish and of the 8 we had 5 over 10 pounds with one just under 20 pounds. Then we moved into state waters and continued to catch and released another twenty or so fish to make our state water limit. We had a blast!!

The fall fishing here is just too good to try and tell you in writing. It’s something you have to experience. I know from experience there is no better place to catch the oversized Bull Reds the right here. So if this is one of those things you’d like to do on your list of things to do, then give me a call, I’ll hook you up!!!!

Capt. Eddie

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
