Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing in January can either be great or terrible; there’s hardly ever anything in between. Last week, the wind finally got to blowing in the right direction - out of the north, this allowed us to get back out to the areas that are holding the fish. The Flounder bite is as good as it gets right now, these fish are holding in 40 to 60 foot of water around any kind of structure that you can find and they are hungry!!!! On last Thursday’s trip we used four dozen shrimp, two dozen Bull Minnows and four packs of Berkley Gulp Shrimp in the new penny color to catch close to 80 (that’s right 80) fish, we kept 35 of the biggest for some of the best eating the Gulf has to offer. The Red Fish are starting to run the beach, right in close to where the surf is breaking. This allows the sight fishermen the best of the best. We have been catching lots of the winter False Albacore in the same place, also.
Up in the bays the fishing has been tough. All the rain and wind has the water dirty and I do mean dirty. It looks like chocolate milk, I hate trying to catch fish in dirty water! Last Wednesday, I worked my way up into Escambia Bay looking for some cleaner water and when we found it we started catching fish, mostly Sheephead along with a few nice Red Fish. Down around the three-mile bridge rubble the White Trout bite has been ok as long as you are there when the bite is hot. As the water continues to clean up over the next few days, this area will definitely get better and better.
The Bull Reds are still around in some fashion, it’s a matter of whether or not you are willing to put the time in to find the fish or not. If you do decide to take the time to look, it can be very rewarding. I got a call from a friend last night who did so and was rewarded with a 70 fish day yesterday. Just so you know what I am talking about he went 30 miles one way in the Gulf to find them.
Take advantage of the nice days that come between the fronts. As you can see the fishing can be great this time of the year--that is if you can handle a little cold weather.
Angling is not only a most agreeable and delightful amusement, it also imparts health and long life!
I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!
