Pensacola, Navarre & Perdido Key

Capt. John Rivers
October 24, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fall has arrived and the fishing has been great!

Kings in the bay, trout on the flats, or black snapper in the pass? Take your pick, because it’s going to be a great week of fishing in Pensacola. Although we have had a lot of rain this past week, around 25 inches last checked, the fishing keeps getting hotter as the air gets cooler. Just this past Saturday, we hooked a bunch of trout just east of Bob Sights bridge in the ICW, and most were keepers around 16 – 19” with a couple over 20”.

If you’re looking for some great light tackle action, Pensacola bay is where you want to be for catching Kings! Tossing out a live menhaden or a lively white trout on a large bobber or balloon will entice these toothy critters to strike.

Flounder fishing at night has also been prosperous along the sandy patches of Ft. Pickens and on the points heading out of the pass. Use a small bull minnow or small eley and you’ll undoubtedly hook up a few for dinner. The big redfish I’ve been talking about for the past few weeks should start to show up with the next few cold fronts. We’re expecting to have a cold front this week and this should force the flounder to move out to the gulf and bring the reds back into the bays. The last week of October and the first part of November is a great time to catch a variety of fish. The temperature of the water starts to cool and this has the fish on the move and they are feeding to fatten up for the winter. Flounder, redfish, kings, and trout? Can’t decide? Then book a trip or two for this fun time of fishing here in the panhandle!

Till next time, here’s wishing you bent rods and screaming drags.
