Fishing Report

Well, if any of you fisherman are watching the weather, you know what I’ve been doing the last 4 days--running from the lightning storms! This also means the Nearshore fishing has been to a minimum for the last few days. Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to fish with Dan and Scott Harris from Macon, GA. Scott said at the end of the day that we accomplished his goal, he had landed 2 of the biggest fish that he has ever caught. One was a nice 30 pound Amberjack and the other was a 35 pound King Mackerel, both real good fish in anybody’s book! Then, there was one we didn’t try to put in the fish box, cause everybody was scared of all the teeth this critter had! (the mouth on this Cuda looked like an alligators mouth). It was a giant! I guessed the weight at 60 pounds and the thing was every bit of 6 feet long! On Friday and Saturday, I had a nice father and son, John and Johnny Jones from Lilburn,GA. We caught some of the same as the day’s before. We iced down a 40 pound Amberjack and released several more, a nice King, and a few Snapper, had several Sharks, and a couple of nice Cuda also. There are some of the biggest schools of the False Albacore out there right now that I’ve ever seen, literally acre size schools and a lot of them. We were catching some out of a large pod and as I looked around I counted 4 other pods within sight, man this is an awesome fishery and I’m lucky enough to call it home. Schools of Chicken Dolphin are on the weeds - just ease up to any floating debris and toss a Chug Bug around the edge, if there are any around they will come to investigate the commotion. Then, toss a Buck tail jig or a small live Cigar minnow on light tackle back in there and supper is in the ice box! Still no Tarpon on the hook yet, but keep looking at the reports, because it won’t be long now. We are seeing more and more pods of fish everyday.

Inshore - The big female Specks are becoming an everyday thing now. (Take note, I’m giving up a top secret) Take the soft plastic jerk bait like the Berkley “Inshore Power” Jerk Shad in my favorite color (Limetreuse), add a 4/0 Gamakatsu Round Bend worm hook on an 8 pound spinning outfit, then hit the grass flats and you’ve got my secret weapon for a Gator Trout! But, don’t tell everybody or Berkley won’t be able to keep up with production of the Limetreuse jerk shad. Schools of slot size Reds are still showing up, mostly around the docks and every now and then we will see schools roaming the flats. They like the gold spoons, like the Johnson’s Silver Minnow and Sprite. Be sure to throw top water baits early at low light, as the top water action is at its best right now. The Flounder are getting more dependable, you don’t have to fish the Pass for them anymore, it just takes live bait. Get some Bull minnows from Action Bait and Tackle (850-936-0545) and Carolina Rig it to a small #1 circle hook with a 6 or 8 inch leader and drag them on all the sand flats close to good water, this has been producing some real nice doormats lately.

It’s all good right now, all you need to do is get out there. You ain’t going to catch’em

sittin’ on the couch!!

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
