Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report
For the most part, February has been very typical- with a little above normal temperature, normal amounts of rain fall, very clear water, Big Bull Reds and COBIA frenzy on every Florida Panhandle anglers mind. While searching the beach already for the first Cobia of the season, it’s just a few weeks away now and the excitement is almost unbearable. I still have a few days left in March and plenty of days left in April, so call now to assure you get one of the prime days to try your hand at one of these 100# beasts.
Since the Speckled Trout season is closed the month of February, there has been little to no pressure put on these fish. But with March just a few days away and the water temperature above normal and the salinity level normal, I’m looking for the big sow Specks to be on the grass flats soon. I’ll start searching at the mouths of all the bayous and rivers soon. These fish will be hungry and will eat just about anything they can catch.
We have had a banner season catching and releasing the Bull Reds; I had several days that we landed 50+ of these awesome fish. By now most of the Reds have started there migration back into the Gulf. Yesterday I spotted quite a few nice Reds running the beach and on the second sand bar. And now as the bait have started showing up, there will still be a few of these nice fish to catch, but the 50+ fish days will have to wait 8 months.

With the Sheephead being a fine table fare, now is the time to git-er-done as they are stacking up in Pensacola Pass in good numbers now. They will be there by the thousands for about six to eight weeks as they perform there annual spawning ritual. Catching an eight to ten pound Sheepie is not uncommon.
For the avid Speckled Trout fisherman April is also the month to be booking a trip to try and catch the true Gator Trout, this is when I catch the most of my biggest Specks. Trout up to 36 inches and between 8 and 10 pounds would be a sure enough WALL HANGER!
I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing.
