Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

If just catching fish is what this job is about, it would get old fast. I love meeting new anglers, teaching a young angler how to tie a knot, watching them catch a nice fish and the happiness that comes on the faces of young and old alike when a plan comes together. And just spending time with Mother Nature, there is never a dull moment, just stop for a few minuets and take a look around if you don’t you will never know what you’re missing. I have the best job in the world!
Last Friday I had the opportunity to take a good friend of mine Capt. Bob Quarles along on a trip with my daughter’s school teacher, (that had never been fishing before.) Ms. Archer thinks fishing is easy, by 8:30 we had a limit of A.J. and I started pulling the anchor to reposition closer to the reef for the Snapper.
The Red Snapper bite has been awesome and the Amberjack have been on fire. Capt. Bob wanted to catch an Amberjack on the fly rod. I thought we would be able to get a Snapper to hit a fly also, no luck with the Snapper on the fly this time, but the Amberjack cooperated. And in short fashion I might add. I got to film Capt. Bob fighting a nice A.J. on the fly rod I actually watched the fish eat the fly. Now that is awesome, not everyday do you get to watch a professional fly-fishing guide teasing Amberjack into taking a fly.
Lets see what all there is going on right now, King Mackerel, I had Don Mersman and couple of his friends down from Nashville last week and the wanted to catch Kings for their family to have a fresh fish cookout while here in Destin on vacation. If we had landed every fish that we had hooked up we would have had a dozen or so fish. But fate only put 2 fish in the ice box. We had a nice 40 pound fish to the boat 2 times only to have the wire cut on the 4th or 5th run from under the boat. We also caught 3 Amberjack on the king rods. Now that is a challenge, landing Amberjack on 15 pound test king rods.
The Spanish Mackerel are thick, and some bigger ones are showing up, I‘ve seen a couple of schools of Black Fin Tuna busting bait just outside the second sand bar.
Big schools of slot sized Red Fish are cruising the beaches in the crystal clear emerald green water. Lots of Bull Sharks are showing up, and of course the Lady Fish and Blue Fish are eating everything you put out there.
The Inshore fishing has been just as good, lots of nice Speckled Trout are being caught, the early morning and late evening top water bite is getting real good. Throw a Top Dog jr. or a Zara Spook jr. and watch what a massive explosion a nice 5 pound Speck will do on your plug, not to mention what it will do to your heart rate. The Flounder bite is picking up, tip a jig head with strip bait or a bull minnow, ease it along a sand bottom close to the grass and see what kind of doormat you can pull up. The Slot sized Red Fish are all over all the inshore structure, rocks, docks and grass beds. My go to lure for these fish is the Johnson Sprite spoon and the soft plastic jerk baits. Also keep a 15 pound outfit ready with a big top water chugger tied on for the Jack Crevalle they are all over the bay and sound now, and man will they pull hard.
It’s all good right now and the best is yet to come, typically it’s June before the fishing picks up and it’s been awesome already. I can’t wait to see what we have in store for us.
I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing.
Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
