Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
August 3, 2005
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

First, I’ll apologize for the delay in the fishing report. I’m still without a home phone line, thanks to Dennis. I’m copying this to a disc and loading it at the public library.

How can anyone expect to get any fishing done with all these storms blowing in! First Arlene, then Cindy and a direct hit from Dennis, all in one month’s time, man these things sure cut into an angler’s time on the water. All’s good at the home front though, very minimal damage from any of the storms, but the beaches from Pensacola Beach to the Beaches of South Walton, East of Destin have taken a beating. A lot of the beach front property will take a long time to get back into shape.

As for the fishing-- June was a great month. Inshore fishing was as good as it gets. I caught a lot of Speckled Trout and quite a few over five pounds. The slot size Reds were and still are a good bet, the Reds can take the changing water a lot easier than the Specks can.

The Nearshore fishing was awesome in the month of June and into July it just got better. We caught a lot of good Red Snapper, Amberjack and several hundred King Mackerel, Barracuda, Bull Sharks, Big Jack Crevalle and even a small but feisty Hammer Head Shark. The False Albacore are schooling and are a blast on the light tackle. There are lots of Spanish Mackerel, Lady Fish and Blue Fish. There are Tarpon around Pensacola Pass to be caught but most of the beach Tarpon are to the East towards Destin.

The Bull Reds are starting to show up. I have caught 2 around Pensacola Pass while fishing for King Mackerel. We even saw 3 Sail Fish hammering a school of cigar minnows just past the number 1 buoy a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to cast to them. That has not been the only sighting of Sail Fish in close, I have heard of several.

Right now the inshore fishing is good early; we are catching a lot of Speckled Trout (with most being short) on top water plugs and soft body jerk baits, but still a lot of fun. The Flounder are making a strong showing as of the last few days, fishing Bull Minnows on the bottom around Pensacola Pass will put some nice doormats in the cooler. The slot size Reds are doing well on the beach, sight casting to these schools are a lot of fun. You have to catch the surf low to make it easier to sight the fish but when the conditions get right it’s ON!

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
