Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
October 22, 2005
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME RED FISH!!!!!!!

First I want to start with a pray for all the many folks that have been and are going to be affected by the Hurricane Wilma.

I went North yesterday (10/21) on a scouting trip to see if the shallow Northwest Escambia bay waters were teaming with loads of bait yet. Wow, I new it was time but man was I ever surprised to see the amount bait and FISH that was there, I can’t wait till the next trip now to get back up there. First this is every fly-fisherman’s paradise. There were schools of 20 pound Jack Carvelle that were easy taking on big top water plugs. Now that’s a sight for sore eyes. Working a Super Spook and seeing a 20 pound Jack destroy it in 3 foot of water. Next I was looking at it being at almost dead low tide and it wasn’t long the water stopped moving and the catching started slowing a little, this was about 45 minuets to and hour of non-stop action of all kinds. From casting to a 5 foot long Alligator to 1 Largemouth Bass, 3 Red fish, (1 oversized and 2 slot sized) and 3 big Jacks. Then we started working different areas in search of anything that would eat a lure. We saw tailing Reds in several different areas and caught several nice Speckled Trout over the next 2 hours. It was great to see all the GOOD grass growing in that area again. It was 3 years ago the salinity level got so high in the summer it killed all the grass, it has been the Dead Sea for the last 2 years. But now it looks like it getting back to normal. I had a great time with Capt. Bob Quarles operator of Blue Heron Guide Service (fly-fishing is his specialty) and my friend Jonathan a fun day on the water.

I was glad to see this area doing well, fishing has been off a good bit the last several weeks with all the weather we’ve been having and a bout with the red tide, and now the surf is being pounded by 6 to 8 foot swells from the effects of this powerful storm Wilma that is 600 miles away,. But in couple of weeks; it’s all going to bust wide open, get ready for a good time of catching.

Now down to business! The next 2 months are going to be booking up fast for the avid Bull Red fisherman, so if you want to experience a touch of Louisiana Fishing in Northwest Florida, either up in the back country for Speckled Trout and tailing Red Fish or in Pensacola Bay and the Gulf fishing the massive schools of over sized Bull Reds now is the time to start planning a few days on the Emerald Coast with me and enjoy this Great place I get to call HOME!!!!

Well its time to get the springtime count-down started. When you put into weeks, it’s only 20 weeks till the spring Cobia run to get under way. Calls for the Spring Holidays will start coming in soon so check your calendar and start planning you fishing trip and vacations early so you will be sure to get the days you want and book a day on the beautiful Emerald Coast Florida with Full Net Fishing Charters.

My hat is off to the Blazer Boat people (www.blazerboats.com), it was a pleasant experience working with them on getting the new boat. And man what a fishing machine! This boat will impress any bay and backwater fisherman. The boat with 3 anglers, fully loaded will plane in less than 2 feet of water and run in 18” of water. We fished a 2420 bay boat in 12 inches of water loaded and with 3 anglers. It’s great fun to run it with the F250 Yamaha four stroke engine, what an awesome work of engineering.

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
