Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
June 28, 2006
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello fellow anglers. It’s good to have a day to sit and write a report. Today I had a last minuet cancellation that allowed me to have time to do so.

I’d like to start with a big THANK YOU to all my clients, sponsors, supporters, and most of all, my wife for letting me do what I love to do!

I will fish for food!!

First I want to recall for you June 7th, my client Butch and his son Josh wanted a day of Red Snapper and King Mackerel. Well they got both and a lot more than they bargained for. By the way of a Cobia 56” long and 75 pounds, now I’ve caught Cobia before but she is the largest I have ever boated. She ate a live cigar minnow on a snapper outfit, 25 pound test with a 40 pound leader and a small circle hook. It took us 45 minuets to get her in the boat and then it was all HIGH FIVES!!

We were fishing a public reef 9 miles out of Pensacola Pass in 80 foot of water. I was the one who hooked her up as Butch and Josh were doing all they could with the Red Snapper that we had up in the chum slick. I thought I might be able to fool one of the big Snappers into eating a big live bait. I was watching the bait sink into the deep blue water when from underneath a very large brown object rose and inhaled the cigar minnow 20 foot below the boat. I summoned for Josh to come and get some that I had just hooked up what looked like a 100 pound Cobia. after about 20 minuets Josh passed the rod off to Butch and he go to experience what it feel like to be hooked up to the back of a Volkswagen on steroids. This will be one of those days that will be talked about for along time to come.

Now on to present fishing adventures, the beach fishing is as hot as it gets right now. King Mackerel in abundance around the loads of bait on the channel markers going out Pensacola Pass, big schools of False Albacore for the light tackle and fly fisherman to have fun with. Spanish Mackerel are not as thick as they should be but they are there. We have been having a good time sight casting to the smaller Sharks on the beach with light tackle. Just in the past few days there has been a large influence of pods of Tarpon showing up. I have yet to find one to eat a bait but it won’t be long. The Tarpon is my personal favorite and I’ve not been sleeping good thinking about getting out there tomorrow and try to get hooked up. There have been several sightings of Sail Fish in close, within 5 miles of the beach. I saw one last Friday as we were coming in from a Snapper trip. That was an awesome sight to see. She was just easing around on the surface with about half her sail out of the water. By the time we got stopped and turned around she had gone down so we didn’t get a bait to her. But you can bet I’m keeping a lot closer eye on the water now. All this is and much more its great to live in paradise.

The inshore fishing is in the summer pattern. The Speckled Trout are being caught early in the morning on top water plugs but after the sun gets up they are falling into the deeper water and are tough to catch. There’s more Red Fish now than I seen in a long time. We are catching them in a lot of different places. Sight casting to them on the shallow sand flats on a full tide is a fun way to catch them but after the sun gets up I move to the docks that have a roof in them that cast a shadow and pitch a 3 inch Berkley Gulp Shrimp on a ¼ oz. jig head into the shadow and hang on if there are any Reds there you will find out quick.

Thanks for reading my reports and if you have any questions about the area drop me an email and I’ll be glad to answer. As my dad has told me time and time again, I might not know the answer but I know someone that does.

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
