Good Time To Fish In Southwest Florida

Capt. Bill Russell
April 20, 2009
Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Finally the wind let up this week to a very fish-able breeze. And the fish responded with a bite that started a little slow early in the week but really got rolling into the weekend. Getting back on strong tides also helped especially for getting the snook to bite. During the later part of the week we didn't catch what I would consider a lot of snook, but we did average one or two "keeper size" fish up to thirty inches a day. The way snook fishing was last week I will take that anytime. Our best snook bite was on the last half of the incoming tide while pitching live shiners along shorelines. The best action all week came over grassflats in about eight feet of water in northern Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor. After setting anchor we would chum a little with live shiners then the action would begin. First the sea trout would arrive and in good numbers. Also the size was good averaging over sixteen inches with the largest just shy of twenty-two. Next the spanish mackerel and bluefish would arrive and some big ladyfish. The macks were good size running up to twenty-four inches. We also caught cobias and sharks that showed up to play. Our largest cobia measured thirty-two inches, just shy of the legal size but still a great battle on lite tackle. The sharks averaged about three feet and also were very strong fighters on the lite gear. When these fish get chummed up and feeding it gets pretty crazy and you really never know what you are gonna catch from cast to cast, but you can almost be assured you will get hit by something each time. Its perfect for the kids, we had a seven year old on my boat on one of the days when the action was hot and he wore himself out and had an absolute blast. The funny thing was with all the different fish he caught and some really good fighters, he caught a puffer fish that blew up with air and thought that was the coolest catch of the day. As we move toward the end of April its a great time to fish in Southwest Florida. Snook season is winding down to an end and tarpon season is getting ready to kick off. All that's left to ask for is some good spring weather.
