Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing Report for the week ending 2/28/ 2010
Fishing Monday with Bob Schuitema and his nephew Adam Bowers we had a windy day which being out of the south made it warmer but had the open water churned up that we had to duck behind islands on the west side of Pine Island.
We hit several oysterbars on the higher water that produced several bigger trout from 18-22 inches using a live shrimp under a popping cork, suprisingly fishing some nice potholes the trout were more of the schooling size 15 inches but a bit slow to bite. After hitting two or three oysterbars and having dinner in the well we moved to a protected cove that usually has some larger redfish, the wind being strong enough that you could not see the fish moving we went to casting a topwater skitterwalk. Even though this was not the best topwater situation the bigger trout were aggressive enough to hit the plugs , Adam and Bob did not get a redfish but the trout were much bigger than in the previous days.
Wednesday fishing with Bob and Ann Holtzrichter we had a approaching front that gave us about every different type of weather that you could get. Going on the success that I had had earlier in the week we started casting skitterwalks in some of the areas that had fish Monday. With lighter winds we were able to drift through the shallow grass finding big trout every couple of hundred yards. I did find that whenever these trout would hit the topwater plug and not come back we followed it up with a live shrimp under a popping cork and were able to catch just about every fish that we had seen. After having put two twenty plus inch fish in the well for dinner and release three more that were over four pounds we headed for one more stop before we would head in. The Holtzrichters were about to find out just how good the fish can bite before one of these fronts. We stopped at a small oysterbar and with a live shrimp under a popping cork Bob had his first redfish within thirty seconds. This went on for thirty to forty minutes with Bob and Ann taking turns and sometimes doubling on reds until Bob hooks what appears to be a snook. Most of the reds were in the eighteen and under class and while they fight good we could tell this was a bigger fish, as he gets the fish closer to the boat it turns out to be a twenty six inch trout that was just under six lbs. This was the type of bite you just don't get to see everyday and so good that Bob and Ann were able to sit down and eat there lunch for ten minutes and get up and catch two or three more fish before the weather told us it was time to leave.This one spot produced at least ten redfish each and the biggest trout I have seen in a while. A great bite and a great trip for these folks that they will remember for a long time.
Friday and Saturday got us back to cooler weather and slowed the bite down some but we did get to see some good flashes of spring this week.
