Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing report for the week ending 3/28/2010
This week with some of the warmest water and air temperatures we have seen this year gave us a great variety of spring species. With the majority of this weeks trips being families and wanting to catch numbers of fish over size. Seatrout on the grass in 3-6 ft. of water has been excellent using a white redfish magic, it has out fished live shrimp 4 to 1 if you like casting.
A nice surprise is that along with the trout are silver trout which while not being as big as spotted are great fighters for there size, also bluefish, mackerel and in some spots to many ladyfish to count. If you like action this is some of the best light tackle fishing we get, sometimes you never know what you are going to get. A perfect example we were catching trout and bluefish earlier in the week and had two 40 inch cobias swim well within casting distance. Another sighting later in the week fishing with my son a 80lb. Tarpon laid up in a pothole enjoying the sun until I disturbed him, while neither of these fish were hooked it was encouraging to see these fish are showing up in the area.
This week did give us a better week for redfish especially on the days before the fronts with south or west winds and higher water. The best bet is a live shrimp under a popping cork around oysterbars or mangrove shorelines.
For bigger trout and redfish top water plugs are still working well on the days with lighter winds.
I am seeing good numbers of bigger snook in most of there normal spring spots but I have not been encouraged with the way they are reacting.
These fish are staged and ready to fire off any day now, our best snook fishing is just around the corner.
This weeks weather looks good with lighter winds after Tuesday, sunny skies and temperatures near 80.
I do have a couple of openings this week.
