Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 5/9/2010

This week brings a close to an interesting spring of inshore fishing for snook, redfish and probably some of the best sea trout fishing I have seen in years. Size was the key with trout in the mid to upper twenty inch range normal. I believe that a lot of these bigger trout took up home in places that our snook that were killed off by the freeze used to be. I have noticed a visible change in size of the trout this week from prior indicating that they are making there move to the beaches for summer. The exception being mangrove snapper which have taken there places in the bay, one of my favorites for dinner. Our attention will turn to the beaches for the next several weeks with a inshore trip here and there.

I am glad to say that the tarpon are here in good numbers, and with the lighter wind days producing the best fish from Sanibel to Charlot harbour. We have had our share of windy days to start May which can make sight fishing impossible. Temperatures in the 90"s and a summer southeast wind in the morning and a west sea breeze in the afternoon is the recipe for great tarpon fishing on the beaches.
Thread herring are showing up on the beaches and Charlot Harbour and more shinners on the shore will have the snook and trout not far behind.
Sharks are also showing up in good numbers, we have hooked a couple of 4-6 ft. hammerheads while tarpon fishing and small blacktips are always present.

I still have a couple of openings for tarpon in May and we should be fishing them well into June and maybe even July depending on when rainy season kicks in.
