The wait for a bite

Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today started out with getting bait with Ron and John before picking up Sandy at their dock. We made a run over to Pine Island sound to try for some redfish. Right off the bat we had a fish on but it was a flounder. We worked a shoreline making cast after cast but nothing wanted to eat. We moved spot to spot looking for hungry fish. We finally got onto some hungry snook but still no reds. The tide was moving in but not until we got a southwest wind did it start moving good. I made the run from Pine Island sound back to east side of Matlacha pass. Ron, John and Sandy were patient knowing that the fish had to eat. It was time to call it a day but we still had an hour of incoming tide. I told them that I wasnt happy with the slow bite all day and wanted to give an extra hour. It paid off for them with three trout from 24 1/2 to 25 1/2 with a few running in the 18 inch range. Then came a underslot red along with Rons 30 inch red. It doesnt seem as hard to release a overslot fish as an underslot. Then John had the hot rod with a few snook hungry for a bait. It was a slow day but a strong finish.
