Port Canaveral - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report 06/22/10

Saturday, and tournament crowds had us on the water early to avoid the boat traffic. We left Port Canaveral with 4 guest aboard at 5:00am. Weather had been a question mark, with conditions worsening over the next few days, but calm sea marked the trip out. Our main goal was getting Mahi in the icebox, and bottom fishing along the way. We ran south to Pelican Flats to try out a few Kings to start the day. We did manage to hook up a few but they were not hooked well enough to get to the boat. The largest managed to be worked to the boat and nearly in gaff range, when it decided that the 20lb mono was no match for it (likely wrapped the line on the steel leader). We drifted the reef a little while to allow some bottom fishing. Some nice fat Sea Bass were caught, Trigger and Vermillion Snapper were also caught. We worked out to a little deeper water to continue the hunt, and had a considerable water temp and color change along with some scattered weeds. We quickly let out some Ballyhoo, and within 5 minuted was rewarded with a Mahi. It was a nice Bull, and we flatlined some offerings to see if he had any friends, but none were seen nor and additional bait taken, so we worked him towards the boat and into the icebox. We continued working this line north, but with no more action, pulled lines in to quicken the pace to our next stop. As we neared the next bottom structure, now in 230' of water, we spotted some flying fish, so the lines went out again. Thistime it did not even take a minute fir a Bull Mahi to attach himself to our bait. Like the previous fish we sent out some flatlines, but he too apeared to be solo. He was a good bit larger than the previous 20;b Bull, so we tool our time, but he too added to the icebox collection. We continued our journey, with sending lines out, and this time a fish did not even wait for it to get all the way out, though this fish was not an icebox filler, but a catch and release Sailfish. The waters had really Blue'd up, and water temp was now at 85deg, so we knew we were fully into the Gulfstream. We took a few pass's at the Copper Wreck, but with 4kt drift, against the wind, it was a little difficult getting bait to the bottom, even with 40oz of lead on one rig, and the 8lb downrigger on the other side. We decided to work our way in and hit a few more bottom spots. We stopped at 120' and drifted a few passes on artifical structure. As always, flatlines were out while we bottom fished, and it was rewarded with a third Mahi in the icebox. This cow was the smallest of the day at 15lbs. Back to port we went to load the boat and clean the fish. 15 hours after leaving my home, I was back, but still had boat cleaning to do. A long tiring day, but fun none-the-less watching the action of anglers fighting jumping fish.
