Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report
I took 3 members of the Port St Lucie Anglers club out for bottom fishing. The weather was perfect. Seas were flat, slightly over cast, and very little current. The water was a gorgeous blue with easily 40 feet or more visibility and 82 degrees. We were slightly north of the snapper hole, our first stop was 8o feet of water. As usual we were getting a lot of grunts and small vermilion snapper, along with under size trigger fish. We kept the grunts and used them for both live and cut bait. We were also using cut squid and frozen sardines. We got 1 real nice trigger fish while there. I put a large cut bait on a longer leader with a 5/0 circle hook and was able to boat a nice mutton snapper measuring at just over 17". We also got a nice lane snapper at the 80 feet mark. We decided to try deeper so we went out to the 100 to 110 feet mark. We started catching black sea bass. We caught a lot of through backs including some of the smallest I ever saw, but we also boated 4 that were real nice and right around 14". When that area slowed down I decided to try the 150 foot area since we didn't have a lot of current. All we got out there were some sand perch. After about a half hour in the deep water we came back in to the 80 foot mark but a mile north of our starting point and continued getting fish just under legal size with a few nice fish mixed in.
