Indian River Lagoon Fishing

Capt. Mark Rosen
February 4, 2016
Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

I had a 3 person charter today. Due to the forecast fishing my favorite reef spots were out of the question. I decided to take the 24' boat into the river. We launched at Stan Blum ramp in Fort Pierce. The wind was blowing hard out of the south we had outgoing tide. There was a heavy chop in the Indian River lagoon. We fished lures, live shrimp and frozen shrimp. We caught a couple of bait fish on the shrimp and put them back on a live line. One of the crew caught a nice e 18" Gag Grouper which we released. Another member of the crew caught a nice Mangrove snapper. We also released several small mutton snappers. The water was 75 degrees and as usually very dirty. We had wind against current today. The wind effect was much more pronounced on the boat then the outgoing current. This caused us to drift north. We were drifting at about .6 knots. I was able to bump the engine in and out of gear to keep us on the channels edge. I tried to keep the boat on the east side of the channel and tried to keep it on the slop as much as possible. The frozen shrimp out fished both the live shrimp and the lures today.
