March 15 Bottom Fishing

Capt. Mark Rosen
March 16, 2016
Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

I took a friend and two new members of the Port St Lucie Anglers club out to the snapper hole for a day of bottom fishing on Tuesday. The seas were running 2 feet in the morning as we headed out. I didn't go to my normal spot, instead I went to the spot we ended at on Monday. There were 100os of grunts on the bottom mixed in with some vermilion and lane snappers. Though we caught a lot of fish the number of keepers were far and few between. I tried a few other spots in the same area with the same results. I decided to try deeper went to the 100 foot mark and drifted with very little luck so I decided to leave the area and head to a spot that worked 2.5 miles north in 90 feet of water. Once I electronically anchored we caught trigger fish right away. We also caught a lot of vermilion snapper but they were all short. Mixed in with the vermilion snappers were some lane snapper as well. We put a live line up on top and a live line on the bottom. I ended up with 2 live lines on top one was a couple of 100 feet from the boat with a float and the second around 25 feet from the boat with a float. I saw a nice king hit the short line and handed the rod to my friend who was standing right next to the rod. He got it alongside the boat and I gaffed it and got it over the gunwales and in the boat. By the end of the day we had a bunch of nice trigger fish and lane snapper along with the king mackerel. I also caught my first lion fish, I cleaned it and cooked it up they are very tasty.
