Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report
The snapper hole has been hot so we went back again, its 12 miles NE of Fort Pierce Inlet The snapper hole is really misnamed it's not a hole but actually a fairly large area of natural reef. The area is easily a few miles wide and 6 to 8 miles long. I have over a 100 spots marked in the area. The nice thing about the area is if someone is on your numbers there are plenty of spots close by. The depth runs from 80 feet to just over 100 with the reef areas coming up about 10 feet. It generally shows up real good on the bottom machine. This trip the sea surface water temperature was 79.7 degrees, with amazing clarity around 40 feet. The current was fairly light, making it very easy for my Minkota I-Pilot to hold me on the spot. We were using cut squid and cut sardines for bait then added cut grunts to the mix. We were using a triple hook chicken rig made from 50# andie line and 3/0 J hooks. I also had a long line out in the hopes of getting muttons and 2 live baits on the top. I deployed chum on this trip which I make using ground fish , cracked corn and bunker oil. The hope was to entice more yellow tail snapper. We did get some yellow tail but not as many or as big as I would have liked we did get some real nice size lane snapper and a few vermilion snapper. We caught 1 real nice red grouper at 22" and a lot of gray trigger fish about half were legal. By the end of the day we had a nice cooler full of tasty fish.
