Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian River Fishing Report

March 31, 2005

INSHORE:

It's been nice weather most of the week with some winds, but not enough to keep anyone from fishing the river. It has produced a mixed bag of fish this past week and provided a lot of fun to all anglers. Expect mild nights to continue this week and the days to be mostly sunny and high 70's to 80's. Great fishing weather. Some winds continue, but that is the norm here in Florida this time of year.

Maddie had bragging rights this week with her 25" snook she caught on the flats south of the bridges. We couldn't quite stretch it out to meet the 26" slot. Try live shrimp in 3-5 feet of water in the early part of the day or if it is overcast. Along the mangroves will also hold the possibility of snook. Jigs or spoons are a great choice along with shrimp.

Trout have been on the flats and hitting mostly live shrimp on a popping cork. Try top water in early mornings before the winds kick up. Spoons and jigs are again a good choice. Warren caught several trout this week in the slot size.

Ladyfish are all over the flats right now and hitting live shrimp with a passion. They are loads of fun to catch and will keep you busy chasing them around the boat. You can also try jigs for some ladyfish action in the river. There are some big ladies out there to give you some great light tackle fun.

Redfish are still on the flats but have been picky about hitting lures and live bait. Jack had two great hookups with reds this week. They have been feeding in 1-2 feet of water and we have seen a number of them tailing on the flats. Keep trying live bait, spoons and jigs and be patient. Redfish action should improve as the water temperatures rise on the flats.

David bought in a 23" flounder from the flats this week. It hit a live shrimp and put up a good fight on light tackle and will look even better with a little butter and lemon!Live shrimp always works best for flounder.

Good places to try fishing this week are the east side of the river on the flats both north and south of the bridges. Ladyfish have been heavy near Round Island on the east side flats. Plan a fishing trip soon and remember to take a kid fishing!

It's been a great week on the water. Fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!

Hope you had a chance to get out fishing!

Good Fishing!
