Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

Now that Hurricane Matthew has moved on and everyone is trying to get back to normal again. I hope that all along the eastern coast have made it through this destructive storm safely. Our area was lucky to escape the worst of the hurricane. As things get settled once again I will be out fishing soon!
Before the weather took over everyone's life for a while, I had the Burke family out for the Michael Shields Memorial Fishing Tournament again this year. Mike and Cameron met me early to fish and we picked up Melissa and Rhys joined us later in the morning. Cameron loves to fish! Last year we did catch some snook, but this year we had a few misses. Snapper and jacks were our catch of the day, but we had a fun time anyway. When the jacks moved in we had fun watching Cameron working hard to land them. When little brother, Rhys, joined us, we kept catching fish. It was a warm day, but the weather was beautiful. While we didn't catch the fish we were targeting, it was a fun morning and hopefully we will get them next year. I always enjoy working for the Michael Shields Memorial Fishing Tournament. It's for a great cause and lots of fun for everyone!
I also had the privilege of being invited to the DOA Outdoor Writer's Event again this year. Thanks to Mark Nichols, Ed Zyak and all the gang at DOA Lures for allowing me to attend. Special thanks to Rufus Wakeman for hosting the event at River Palms. I had David Sikes the first morning. Lots of rain surrounding us made for a short day. We caught jacks and a black drum before the rains moved in for the day. John and Domenic joined me the second morning. The trout bite was awesome with a few snook, jacks and a number of misses for the morning. The DOA glow shrimp came through as always! It was another fun year with old friends and new ones as well.
Top water lures along with the trusty DOA shrimp are excellent choices this time of year. I knew the new 2 3/4" DOA shrimp would be working on other species and landed a usual picky black drum on it. Be careful when on the water for a few days as there will be lots of floating and sunken debris to avoid all over the river.
As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!
