Good action in Sarasota with Capt Jim klopfer

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Once again, the deep flats on the north end of Siesta Key near Big Sarasota Pass and docks and shorelines in Roberts Bay provided clients with steady action on a multitude of species. Redfish, speckled trout, silver trout, Spanish mackerel, flounder, sheepshead, sea bass, jack crevelle, sharks, mangrove snapper, ladyfish, and catfish were landed by anglers using flies, jigs, and live shrimp on charters this week.

Aaron Gibson from Orem, Utah and his dad Steve did some fly fishing with me on Monday morning. Speckled trout and ladyfish hit green/white, charteuse/white, and all white Clouser Minnows at the Marina Jack, Radio Tower, and Moorings flats.

Bill Bockelman and his son Shawn, both from Louisville, KY caught a nice mess of fish on Tuesday morning at the Bird Key and Marina Jack flats. Several speckled trout to 19", silver trout to 12", and four Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds went into the box while jacks, ladyfish, plenty of short trout, and a pair of sharks were released. Shawn caught all of his fish on a 3" glow Gulp! Shrimp while Bill stuck with the real thing. The larger shark ran all the line off, we were down to the knot, but we cranked up and chased it down!

Raymond Miles from Huntington, NY and his brother Rich Miles from Reston, VA caught speckled trout to 18", Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, jacks, sea bass, ladyfish on the deep flats on Wednesday morning. After putting dinner in the box, we tried some mangrove shorelines and caught a redfish and several snappers. We used live shrimp all morning.

Thunderstorms in the morning shut down fishing on Thursday, but we were back at it on Friday. Bob Schilling from Cold Springs, KY took out his 15 year old son Grant and his friend Joe Broerine fishing. They caught a bunch of different species and ended up with a nice box of fish. A pair of speckled trout to 18", six silver trout to 14", a 15" flounder, a 13" sheepshead, and a 2 lb Spanish mackerel went home for dinner while smaller trout, jacks, sea bass, ladyfish, and a shark were released. Most of the fish came on white Gulp! Shrimp fished on the deep flats near Siesta Key. The flounder and sheepshead hit live shrimp under a dock in Big Pass.

Saturday afternoon Scott Huff from Columbia Sportswear treated clients to a trip. We decided to use a pontoon boat from CB's to provide shade and shelter from the sun and potential rain. We worked the bars from Stickney Pt. south to Blackburn Pt. and caught speckled trout and ladyfish on live shrimp and jigs.
