Action and variety fishing Siesta Key, Sarasota, Fl

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather was an issue early in the week but fishing was still very productive on a variety of species. The flats and structure near Big Pass continues to be the best area on my charters. Bait is plentiful, and so are the fish! Species caught this week included redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, sharks, mangrove snapper, snook, flounder, jack crevelle, sheepshead, sea bass, ladyfish, and some big sail cats.

On Monday Doug Sisson from Mason, OH took out his two sons Andrew (11) and Derek (18) for a morning of fishing. Thunderstorms forced us to stay south, in Little Sarasota Bay. Live shrimp free lined on grass edges and oyster bars produced two snook, a 17" speckled trout, a 14" sheepshead, a flounder, a black drum, several ladyfish, a bunch of small mangrove snapper, and catfish.

Theo Dol (15) and his grandfather Paul Damon from Ontario had a good mixed-bag morning on Tuesday. 4 redfish to 18" and mangrove snapper to 12" hit free-lined live shrimp around docks near Siesta Key first thing. Then, we netted up bait and caught a bunch of trout, the largest went 18" and took a pinfish. We moved south near the Stickney Pt Bridge and caught a small snook and a nice 5 lb jack crevelle.

Later in the week, UK resident Keith Williams took out 3 of his children, Georgia (19), Amy (11) and Thomas (11). The bait was kind of small and a little tough, but we managed to load the well in Big Pass, then moved to the Marker # 5 flat. Action was steady on speckled trout, ladyfish, and mangrove snapper, along with a flounder that Thomas caught. He also had a decent shark just about spool him before cutting off. The tide quit and we moved to the middlegrounds and resumed catching fish. We topped off the morning with a small shark that Amy caught on a pinfish.

Doug Forde, manager at CB's Saltwater Outfitters took out his son Landon and a buddy on Friday morning. Fishing was excellent, the boys landed Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs, speckled trout to 16", ladyfish, flounder to 14", snapper to 12", and a small redfish on the flats and docks on the north end of Siesta Key on live bait fish.
